I had to take a 2-hour bus ride to get to Shimendong. And honestly, it was the most worthwhile 2-hour ride I’ve ever taken.
The ocean scenery along the way was absolutely stunning.
Ever since I returned to Taiwan, it had been raining nonstop for nearly two weeks. But in the past few days, the dark clouds finally cleared, and the weather became sunny and beautiful.
So I decided I had to go out and get some fresh air.
And knowing myself – once I go, I don’t like staying close to the city. I prefer going a bit farther. So I chose Shimendong.
Shimendong (with 洞 meaning “cave”) is a sea cave located along the northern coast of Taiwan, in Shimen District of New Taipei City. Based on what I found, the cave was formed through wave erosion and tectonic uplift, creating an arch-shaped opening about 10 meters high.

If you want a panoramic view from above, you can climb the stairs to the top of the arch. It’s one of the best sunset spots – nothing blocks your view as your eyes stretch freely toward the open sea.

I have to say, the ocean in northern Taiwan is truly breathtaking. The water was vividly blue. The sky was also blue that day. It felt as if the sea and the sky had melted into one.
I watched the sun slowly set. The sky shifted from blue, to blue-orange, to pink, and then finally faded away. It only took around 10 minutes – yet so many colors appeared on the horizon.

If you’re thinking about visiting a beach in Taiwan, you might want to consider stopping by this place.
